SILK METAL GLASS Art to Wear

“Silk Metal Glass: Art to Wear,” is the next exhibit in Summer Artists Series sponsored by Rocky Neck Gallery (RNG) opening on Wednesday, July 3 – July 23, 2013.  This exciting new show, curated by RNG’s jewelry artist Deborah Way, features three renown Gloucester artists working in glass, metal and silk: Beth Williams, Camilla MacFadyen and Mer Anderson.
A reception will be on Saturday, July 6, from 5-7 PM.  This event is free and open to the public, providing a wonderful opportunity to meet these artists and learn about their process in creating art to wear.

Beth Williams, Mer Anderson and Camilla MacFadyen have known each other for several years.  The theme of this show highlights the luscious materials these artists choose to work with, to create their version of exquisite art in a wearable format.  Each artist’s chosen medium complements the styles and materials used by the others—three varied, different materials coalesce to present a lively conversation between hard and soft, matte and shiny, bright and muted.

Mer Anderson creates a clean, modern style of jewelry working in sterling and other metals. Her jewelry is suffused with an element of play with a focus on simplified forms, often incorporating kinetic elements that allow for the interplay between the body's movement and the artwork.  Much of her work is evocative, with trace references to objects, both natural and man-made. Recently Anderson has begun working with enamels, exploring color and surface manipulation.

Camilla MacFadyen is primarily a printmaker but with a refreshing twist: she prints on fabric.  She loves the tactile elements fabric provides for her prints.  The drape and movement of silk, along with the pleasure of designing wearing art, are central to her work.  For MacFadyen the natural world offers a bounty of inspiration of colors and patterns to inspire her creative process.

MacFadyen’s art to wear collection will feature seaweed print scarves, silk wall hangings and small collection of clothing called Arrowhead Clothing.  Her scarves are hand dyed, and printed with collograph plates made from seaweed and other flora collected along the coast and woods of New England.  The wall hangings are large pieces printed on silk and hemp.  She collects small objects such as leaves, twigs, and rocks from a special place and uses them to print an image inspired by these gifts of nature.  The luminous landscapes she creates are printed in many layers, then hand sewn and hang scroll-like from a crafted wooden wall bracket.

Suzoe, a clothing collection, is a new venture with her sister-in-law, Suzanne MacFadyen, a designer and dressmaker.  This intimate collection combines Camilla’s hand printed silk organza beautifully tailored into dresses or tops by Suzanne.  The unique designs will be available for sale and special order.

Combining glass, gold, and silver, Beth Williams creates contemporary, elegant jewelry highlighted with the rainbow of colors and textures inherent in her materials.  A studio metalsmith for many years before focusing on glass, Williams’ designs balance these elements resulting in pieces that the owner can wear with comfort and pleasure.  Pure gold granules accent the surface of many of Williams’ lampwork beads, reflecting a signature style that is recognized in exhibitions and publications across the country.

My love of glass and color are what drive my work; inspiration comes from my gardens, the ever-changing light on the ocean and the seascapes that surround me. Multi-layered colors paired with 24-karat gold granules and pure silver threads create miniature sculptures of understated elegance that are tactile, beautiful, wearable," says Williams.

This delightful collaboration will be running for three weeks at Rocky Neck Gallery located at 53 Rocky Neck Avenue, Gloucester, MA.  The show opens Wednesday, July 3 until Tuesday, July 23, 2013.  Gallery hours are Sunday – Wednesday: 11 AM – 6 PM; and Thursday* – Saturday: 11 AM – 8 PM.  (*On Thursday, July 4th, the gallery will stay open until 9 PM.)  There is plenty of free parking.  For more information please check our website: www.rockyneckgallery.com
or call: 978-282-0917.

Be sure to join us for a lively evening on Saturday, July 6 from 5-7 PM for an artists’ reception.  Meet Camilla MacFadyen, Mer Anderson and Beth Williams and see their original, exquisitely beautiful creations in silk, metal, glass: art to own and wear.

COLLECTION/REFLECTION Contemporary Art Installation by Mary Rhinelander

Collection/Reflection, a contemporary art installation by Rocky Neck Gallery and Gloucester artist Mary Rhinelander, is happening on next Saturday, July 6th from 11 AM - 3 PM.  Be sure to see this fascinating installation at the White Ellery House, in Gloucester, MA, an event sponsored by the Cape Ann Museum.

From the Cape Ann Museum events page:

The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present Collection/Reflection by Mary Rhinelander, a contemporary art installation at the White-Ellery House. This program is free and open to the public as part of Escapes North's 17th Century Saturdays.

The installation will focus on an assortment of items Rhinelander has collected throughout her life. Bottle caps, Mussel shells, Aprons, Sea glass and Mirrors, among other things, will be carefully arranged.

The White-Ellery House was built in 1710 and is one of just a handful of First Period (c.1620-1725) houses in Eastern Massachusetts that survives to this day.  It is a 2 ½ story "saltbox" structure with a massive central chimney that once serviced six fireplaces. Unlike other structures as old as this, the White-Ellery House has had very few interior alterations over the years. Stepping inside today, visitors enter much the same house they would have 300 years ago.

The house was built for the Reverend John White (1677-1760), brother-in-law of Cotton Mather, former Chaplain at Fort Saco, author of New England's Lamentations (1734) and Gloucester's first settled minister. It is on the National Register of Historic Sites because of its unique construction and important interior features.

Mary Rhinelander has an MFA in Printmaking from the Museum of Fine Arts. This might suggest that she is a printmaker. She is. However, Mary also paints, cuts, glues, builds, sews, tears, hammers, splatters, and generally mixes up her media pretty thoroughly. Although Mary has only the greatest respect for artists who suffer and live in garrets with no heat, she has lived a relatively comfortable life and LOVES the act of creating and is passionate about color. Especially yellow.

Don't miss this eclectic show from one of Gloucester's multi-talented artist in a uniquely historic setting!

Special thanks to the Cape Ann Museum and Mary Rhinelander

LUSCIOUS SEASCAPES @ RNG

RIP TIDE
Nella Lush
oil/wax on canvas
36 x 36

Rocky Neck Gallery is pleased to announce the second show of the Summer Artist Series introducing the artist Nella Lush and her exquisitely beautiful seascapes and frescoes.  The show, titled Nella’s Journey, opens Wednesday, June 12 until July 2.  An artist reception will be held on Sunday, June 16th from 4-6 PM.  The public is invited to attend this free event and hear Nella talk about her work and process.

An experimental artist, Nella enjoys working on a variety of subject matter from abstracts to florals, landscape to seascapes.  The Cape Ann coastline is her muse where she spends time recording the atmospheric moods of the water, light and sky.  Back in her studio she interprets these emotions on canvas where the process of painting is, for her, a spiritual journey.  She works mainly with oils using cold wax as a medium often adding marble dust to create more texture and depth.  It is her application and scraping of numerous layers, again and again, that shape the final painting.

I connect with things that leave a mystery… that the viewer is digging into the painting and each time they find something different.  I don’t seek perfection: I just seek to be heard and to have the viewer connect emotionally to my work and to bring them to a time and place in their life.”

Nella is represented by the Art Essex Gallery, Essex, CT; the Mystic Seaport Maritime Gallery, Mystic, CT; Lorica Gallery, and Peter Alpers Art, both of Andover, MA.  She is a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists; a member of National Associations of Women Artists in NYC; Rockport Art Association, Rockport, MA; a member and board trustee of North Shore Art Association, Gloucester, MA; President of the Andovers Artists Guild; and associate member of the Oil Painters of America.

Please join us and meet Nella Lush on Sunday, June 16th from 4-6 PM for a reception and artist talk.  Delicious refreshments will be served.

RNG is located on 53 Rocky Neck Avenue, Gloucester.  The hours are: Sunday – Wednesday: 11 AM – 6 PM, Thursday – Saturday: 11 AM – 8 PM.  Free parking is available.  For more information please visit our website www.rockyneckgallery.com or call 978-282-0917

The camera can ‘see’ things that our eyes cannot. Avakian allows the camera to use the ‘real’ world to present us something that doesn’t really exist so that a new world becomes revealed.” Images from this series will be shown at The Cultural Center.
