CLOSED FOR THE SEASON

Rocky Neck Gallery is now closed until the Spring of 2014.  The gallery's famous door of  Russian stamped steel covered with copper boat bottom paint officially closed on Monday evening, October 14th.

 Though the building is now empty of original, distinctive artwork, the gallery's many artists will be working, exhibiting, teaching and talking about their art through the next several months. Be sure to check back here for updates or follow us on Twitter and/or like us on Facebook for news and events featuring our artists.

And be sure to check out the happenings at the Rocky Neck Art Colony Cultural Center open year round with on going art exhibits, classes, lectures, dances and more!

ROCKY NECK GALLERY CELEBRATES

Rocky Neck Gallery hosted its second annual customer appreciation party on Saturday, September 21st in the summer-like evening on the Neck.  Over a 100 guests joined the artists to celebrate another season of art and friendship while sipping sparkling wines and sampling the tasty treats catered by Gourmet Delights of Hamilton, MA.

Rocky Neck Gallery’s Summer Artists Series: Family Trees

Rocky Neck Gallery is pleased to announce the next Summer Artists Series show: Family Trees, featuring the mixed media assemblages of Stephen Thomas Martin.  This is the last exhibit in this series for the gallery’s 2013 season.  And the first time Rocky Neck Gallery is exhibiting the fascinating and mysterious assemblages by Martin of Amesbury, MA.  This new show opens Wednesday, September 25 and runs until Sunday, October 13, 2013.

Martin’s art is both literally and figuratively about reclamation.  While the literal incorporates found objects to form the “ground” of the pieces, of more importance, is the figurative element.  The search for unique “found objects” he uses in his pieces is a big part of his creative process.  In many of his works he incorporates old photos of individuals he discovers at antique shops and flea markets. 

As Martin states, “Using these photographs I am giving new life to people long forgotten by family, friends and society.  They have not only been reclaimed but are indeed reclaiming a place in the existing world, not to be forgotten again.”

Martin is a self-taught artist now working full time to meet the demand for his assemblages.  Prior to this new career, he owned and operated an antique and retail furniture business for twenty years in Newburyport, MA.  Martin is the founder and owner of Gallery 206, a pop-up experimental gallery in Amesbury, MA.  He is also represented by Galatea Gallery in Boston, MA and is a juried member of the Cambridge Art Association, of Cambridge, MA and Newburyport Art Association in Newburyport, MA.  His award winning work is juried into many prestigious shows along with residing in several private art collections throughout the USA.  The corporate collections that currently own his assemblages are Growth Coach Management Consultants, Kodiac Venture Partners, and the Italian movie production company, Blue Suede Shoots.

Please join us on Friday, September 27, from 6-8 PM for an artist’s reception.  Meet Stephen Thomas Martin and learn about his process reclaiming and reinventing new lives for discarded objects.

PATTERN - SCAPES

Cape Ann artists Julia Garrison and Mary Rhinelander explore the virtuosity of the linoleum block print with a focus on Cape Ann in a show they call Pattern-scapes. Building on the art form and tradition of Cape Ann's Folly Cove Designers, both women are creating work on fabric and framed work to be hung on the wall made specfically for this show. Their single and multiple color block prints feature patterns and landscapes in various shapes and sizes. They will also display tools and some of the blocks themselves, so visitors get a sense of what is involved in the often meticulous craft of carving.

Julia Garrison has a background in textile design with a degree from Massachusetts College of Art. Julia has kept the art and sensibility of the Folly Cove Designers alive by continuing to operate the Sarah Elizabeth Shop in Rockport, MA. Started in 1974 by Sarah Elizabeth, who joined the Folly Cove Designers in 1942, the shop acquired its 150-year old Acorn press from Eino Natti, another Folly Cove Designer, who used it to print his linoleum blocks and for printing demonstrations at the Folly Cove Designers barn until they disbanded in 1969. When Sarah Elizabeth retired in 2002 she left her shop in the hands of Isabel Natti, Eino's neice. Julia Garrison now prints her own work on the historic Acorn Press along with the designs of Isabel Natti and Sarah Elizabeth Holloran (1917-2009).

Mary Rhinelander comes to lino-cut via traditional printmaking training and an MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and a BA in Visual and Environmental Studies from Harvard College in Cambridge. She has exhibited in several solo shows in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia and Cambridge MA. Her most recent exhibition in July 2013 was a contemporary art installation called Collection/Reflection at the Cape Ann Museum's White Elery House in Gloucester.
