John also has two prints  in the 75th annual Society of Wood Engravers Exhibition, a juried show traveling in the U.K. and put on by one of the oldest groups devoted to the medium.  This print below "Nugent's Stretch" won a £50 Anniversary Prize.

BOAT YARD BLUES

This Friday the RNG window will feature this work by photographer Tom Robinson-Cox.   This photograph has just won the Griffin Museum of Photography Award for excellence in photography at the Rockport Art Association Second Summer Exhibition 2012.

 

Tom's inspiration for this comes from a boat yard in Maine: "This is a natural unmanipulated photograph of a plug (mold) used for building boats that has been weathering outdoors for many years at Greene Marine in Yarmouth, Maine; the blue tarp is disintegrating, and the epoxy-coated plywood has buckled. I am often inspired by observed scenes and found objects which have a strong graphic quality."  

Boat Yard Blues is 23" high by 27" wide (framed).  It is a limited edition photograph, archival pigment print and priced at $350.  The photograph will be hanging in the gallery window from Friday, July 6th, until Thursday, July 12^th.  To see more of Tom's work visit the gallery or his website at http://tom.robinson-cox.com/.

CRESSY'S LIGHT

CRESSY'S LIGHT

This Thursday, photographer David Piemonte will be the featured artist on the big art wall.  His image, Cressy's Light, will be on exhibit from July 5th until July 18th.  The photograph is a limited edition silver gelatin print .  It measures 25" x 29" framed and is priced at $850.00. 

David describes his work as follows:  "I work completely with black and white film and develop my prints in a wet darkroom.  There are no digital manipulations in my work."

"Cressy's Beach is at the far end of Stage Fort Park in Gloucester, and the serpent you see on the rock is the original painting that was there for over 40 years "

"This image was taken around midnight during a full moon, with a 20-minute exposure.  You will notice the shadows of trees on the rock in the background.  During the long exposure, the stream of light across the horizon was created by the movement of fishing boats going out to sea."

SAS RECEPTION

This past Sunday the  2nd Summer Artists Series reception for Deborah Lloyd Kaufman and her show To Tell the Truth was held in the afternoon.  A steady wave of friends, family and new fans flooded the gallery to see this new exhibit of several large and colorful abstract paintings in acrylic.  Here are some images from the reception.  Deborah's show will be up until July 17th.

OPENING RECEPTION

Rocky Neck Gallery's opening reception held on Saturday, June 16th, filled the gallery with a spirited crowd of artists, friends and families celebrating the 2012 new season.  The gallery welcome seven new members:  painters Kathleen Staab, Phyllis Feld, Elizabeth Gauthier, Dina Gomery and Debbie Schradieck and jewelry designers: Katherine Bagley and Deborah Way.

And the 2nd season of highly successful Summer Artists Series was launched with the first 3-week show of oil paintings by new member Elizabeth Gauthier.  This exhibit, titled  Simplicity Through Form and Color, featured interesting angles and viewpoints of Gloucester's signature buildings' rooftops. This show was up from June 7 - 26th.  If you missed the show you can still see Elizabeth's monotype work at the gallery.   The next SAS show: To Tell the Truth, acrylic paintings by Deborah Lloyd Kaufman, is currently on view until July 17th.  (look for a post on that reception tomorrow.)

NEW ART IN WINDOW

Kate Somers is the featured artist this week with her watercolor painting titled Star of India in the Rocky Neck Gallery window. 

“As you can see it's a perspective of a tall ship sail and American flag.  It ties in with our July 4^th Independence Day holiday and my current work of ship paintings in the gallery."

TO TELL THE TRUTH

New Hampshire artist Deborah Lloyd Kaufman is the second exhibiting juried artist in the Summer Artist Series at the Rocky Neck Gallery.  Her show titled To Tell the Truth will consist of several large abstract paintings in acrylic.  This exhibit opened this Thursday, June 28 and runs until July 17^th. 

“The first truth is the subject matter of my painting, the event happening on the surface of the canvas: the interaction of color, line and shape.  As each painting develops it become something more.  The composition starts to unfold, the painting points to a truth in everyday life: that which lies beneath the surface is very much a part of the whole but not obvious.”

Kaufman states, “I have always been interested in archetypal folk tales, myths and stories about universal human concerns.  I have long been inspired by the art of “primitive” people and children’s art.  I am drawn to the unpolished, to rough edges, to the energy of the spontaneous line that comes from a deep true place.”

For 24 years Kaufman was an art educator in the Keene Public Schools and an adjunct faculty member at Keene State College and Antioch-New England for ten years.  She has exhibited and sold throughout the Monadnock region of New Hampshire.  Her work, which is in private collections across New England, New York and California, includes not only her acrylic paintings but also linocuts, ceramic tiles, and canvas floor cloths.  Kaufman’s studio is located in Spofford, New Hampshire.
