Residency at Rocky Neck Inspires Anne Krinsky's Soprafina Gallery Show

For her second show at Soprafina Gallery, Anne Krinsky is exhibiting architecturally-inspired abstractions, informed by her residency last September at the Rocky Neck Art Colony in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and by a recent trip to Tunisia.
The large carriage door of the Rocky Neck residency studio is sheathed in an embossed, gridded pattern that resembles a boat’s hull or, when inverted, doors, gothic windows and archways. Krinsky says, “I have used grids in my work for many years and shortly after I arrived on Rocky Neck to begin my residency, this one announced itself as ‘my next grid.’’’
Using this grid as a scaffold, the artist has created luminous acrylic and mixed media works on panel and on layered mylar. She has incorporated acrylic transfers --  from photographs of wavelike patterns of light she made while in residence -- into her richly surfaced images.

Krinsky’s observations from a trip to Tunisia also animate this body of work. Forms originating in Tunisian vernacular architecture – complex tiled interiors and white exterior walls punctuated by brilliant blue windows and doors – here integrate seamlessly into Krinsky’s gridded framework.
Miriam Seidel, Independent Curator and Philadelphia Correspondent for Art in America, recently wrote, “Anne Krinsky has developed a way of working informed by grid composition, with subtle geometries inflected by recognizable imagery. Her images… with their delicately drawn lines hover like daydreams in their fields of color.

The artist’s recent retrospective, Anne Krinsky: Time / Line, 2000-2010, at the Trustman Gallery at Simmons College in Boston, explored continuity and change in a decade of her panel paintings and works on paper. The British Museum, the Boston Public Library, Graham Gund and the U.K. charity, Paintings in Hospitals, have purchased Krinsky’s works as have numerous corporations. She has been awarded previous residencies at Fundacion Valparaiso, Mojacar, Spain; Brisons Veor, St. Just, England; and the Millay Colony for the Arts, Austerlitz, NY.

THE CREW REVISED

This blog THE CREW posted on Sunday had some glitches...one was a Google glitch - images could not be posted.  The other was the author as the ceramic artist Cynthia Curtis was left out.  We invite you back to see the stunning photographs taken by four of the gallery's photographers.

The gallery is excited to see so many talented artists returning for the 2011 season.  To date we have 17 artists committed.  In the coming weeks we plan to feature each artist on the blog.  Every media the gallery presents has interesting people each with a story behind their work.  We have lots of talented award-winning individuals creating original works in painting, jewelry, photography, ceramics, mixed media, sculpture and printmaking.

SOCIAL MEDIA MASH

Yesterday several of the Rocky Neck Gallery artists got together at the Pleasant Street Tea Company in downtown Gloucester for a social media (SM) tutorial.  This was organized by the gallery's new marketing director Susan Hershey.  Over strong brew and sweet muffins the artists arrived with laptops to learn how to post, tweet, blog, friend and network virally.

Go-to-SM maven Rachelauren Somers presented an overview on the "why" of these tools, their importance for the gallery, Rocky Neck Art Colony and the greater community of Gloucester.  Rachel followed her talk by introducing the newly launched  Rocky Neck Gallery Facebook page.  She instructed the group on how to establish a facebook presence and more.  This was followed by Martha Wakefield showing the gallery's new Twitter page, the blog and the basics of using these two tools.  It was 2 plus hours of chaotic fun in media mashing. We left, all much improved in SM marketing, with anticipation of an exciting season for the gallery and the artists.

WELCOME

While winter is still dueling with spring for seasonal dominance here at the end of March in Massachusetts—we, the artists, at Rocky Neck Gallery are planning for a hot summer season.  Rocky Neck Gallery is a cooperative gallery featuring original, high-quality, juried artwork from local and regional artists in painting, jewelry, photography, ceramics, printmaking and sculpture.  We are in a historic building right on the water with a special door that opens magically onto Smith Cove.  The gallery is seasonal, opening seven days a week starting June 8th through to October 15.

This woodblock print, designed by artist, Sigrid Olsen, is our logo.  See this as our imprint on Facebook and Twitter and please follow us (here and there) for news and updates about the gallery and the artists.
We have an exciting summer ahead with plans for artist demos and talks, festive Nights on the Neck and a new Summer Artists Series showcasing solo and group art shows in addition to the gallery’s artists’ works.  We are looking forward to 18 weeks of sunny summer days falling into beautiful autumn afternoons, salty sea breezes, fun nights, art, music, friends and family coming together on Rocky Neck.  Stay tuned for more updates on all of the above and we'll be seeing you, soon, in Gloucester on the Neck
